It’s been a little while since I’ve shared a DIY Beauty recipe with you all!  I have to admit, I’m pretty boring when it comes to my skin care routine–I’ve found what works for my sensitive skin and I stick with it!

I’ve mentioned before that I have rosacea and very sensitive skin.  For the most part, that means that most over-the counter skin care products are out for me. Any kind of synthetic fragrance sets my face on fire!  Well, not really, but it sure feels like it!  Even many natural products irritate my skin.

Initially, this is what led me to making my own skin care products.   What I hadn’t expected was how drastically my skin would improve using simple, basic, healthy ingredients  (along with a healthy diet of course!)

My skin care routine has changed a bit over the last 6 months and I’m now incorporating this beautiful Rose Face & Body Cream into my morning routine.

Each morning, I cleanse my skin with sweet almond oil and apply some of my Anti Aging Serum (perfect for sensitive skin!)  I wait a few minutes for the serum to absorb and then apply the Rose Face Cream.

My skin has never felt softer!  Of course, you can use it as a body cream too.  My favorite ways to use the Rose Cream are as a face and hand cream.

What You’ll Need

Sweet Almond Oil

This is one of my favorite carrier oils!   It’s a fabulous makeup remover, body oil, base for a relaxing massage oil or therapeutic oil for pain.  I also love to use it in my body scrubs and homemade lip balms.  It’s just a great all around carrier oil that is the perfect consistency (not too light nor too heavy.)  It’s rich in Vitamin E and monounsaturated fatty acids which are wonderful for the skin.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is not just for cooking!  It makes a wonderful natural moisturizer.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a natural wax that is produced by honeybees and is very hydrating to the skin. In this recipe, we’ll be using it as a binder and emulsifier.  Beeswax is available in blocks or in pastilles (also called pellets.)   Either will work for this recipe.  If you have a block of beeswax, simply shave off small pieces. Pastilles are much more convenient but they are a little more expensive.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is so soothing to the skin.  Many people pull out the aloe vera gel once or twice a year when they get a sunburn but it really does wonderful things for the skin even when you aren’t experiencing a burn! We’ll be using aloe vera gel along with rosewater as the liquid portion in our lotion.

For our recipe, you want to avoid the green aloe vera gel that you see in all the stores.  It is highly processed and contains a lot of unnecessary and even toxic ingredients.  I recommend getting a brand that is made of 97% or more pure aloe vera juice.  You won’t believe the difference!  Even when applied to burns, it is much more soothing and healing than the green stuff.

Rosewater

Rosewater is the wonderful result of distilling rose petals with steam.  It has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.  You can use any remaining rosewater as a toner or facial mist.

Rose or Rose Geranium Essential Oil

Rose essential oil is one of the most precious and beloved oils.  It is wonderfully cooling and creates and restores clear and lustrous skin.  Rose essential oil can be pricey so substitute with rose geranium (also called geranium) or a rose & jojoba oil essential oil blend  if it’s out of your budget.  If using the rose and jojoba oil blend,  you can double the amount of drops since it is diluted.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sweet almond oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 oz (1/8 of a cup) shaved beeswax or beeswax pastiles
  • 1/4 cup aloe vera gel (avoid the heavily processed green kind you see everywhere)
  • 1/4 cup rosewater
  • 5-10 drops rose essential oil or rose geranium essential oil

Instructions

  1. In a double boiler, combine the sweet almond oil, coconut oil and beeswax. Allow the coconut oil and beeswax to completely melt. Stir to combine.
  2. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to come to room temperature. You can speed up the process by putting the mixture in the freezer for 5-10 minutes. It will be the consistency of salve when it's ready.
  3. Add the oil/beeswax mixture, aloe vera gel, rosewater and essential oil to a blender. Blend until your mixture is the consistency of lotion.

    • Reply Jen at I love the smell of roses too, Danielle. The smell of roses always reminds me of my childhood and spending the night at my grandma's (she loved roses too!) I wish that doTerra would come out with a rose EO too (although, I'm tempted to try the blend!)

    • Reply Jen at It sure does, Zoe! haha! Yes, I do have a vegan alternative to beeswax. Candelilla Wax is a great substitute.
  • Reply seda at Hey Jen! Sounds amazing. My only concern is the protection. Should we keep it in the refrigerator since we are not using any preservatives? Thanks!
    • Reply Jen at Hi Seda! Keeping it in the refrigerator would definitely extend its shelf life. I usually split this recipe into two glass containers and put one in the refrigerator and leave one out for daily use. I've used the one at room temperature within 4-5 months with no problems. If you're concerned or giving as a gift, you could add some Rosemary Antioxidant to prolong the shelf life.
  • Reply deb at Jen, thank you for the recipe. I'm a first-timer; just made the cream and it turned out well. Very easy. So easy, in fact, there's no reason NOT to make it. One issue I had, though: I used beeswax pastilles from the local herb store, and they gave the cream a scent I find unpleasant. Like curry! Can barely smell rose. After doing some web research, I found that bad-smelling beeswax is a "thing". So I'm gonna try again with Emulsifying Wax NF, which has no scent. For those who prefer beeswax, I did find what looks to be a nice beeswax here: https://www.ebeehoney.com/beeswax_1lb.html
    • Reply Jen at Thank you so much for sharing your experience and suggestions, Deb! Oh dear, curry is not a scent we're going for in face lotion! I usually buy my beeswax pastilles from Mountain Rose or from a local beekeeper where it has a distinct beeswax scent. Would you stop by and share how the emulsifying wax works for you? I'd love to hear!
  • Reply deb preston at Hi Jen; I made it again and the emulsifying wax worked well, and is scentless. The cream has a nice texture. The lesson for me is, make sure you love the smell of each ingredient.
    • Reply Jen at Hi Deb! Thank you so much for for following up. Since I have easily access to a good quality beeswax, I've never worked with the emulsifying wax but I'd love to give it a try some time. That's true--you must love the scent. That can even apply to the essential oils we use in recipes.
  • Reply Marian at Hi Jen, I was wondering if I can use aloe vera from a real plant instead of buying gel from the store.
    • Reply Jen at Hi Marian, I haven't tried using fresh aloe in this recipe but it's definitely worth a try. The consistency would be similar in fresh aloe, however the shelf would not be as long. You might try using a natural preservative such as vitamin E or rosemary antioxidants and halving the recipe (in which case, use an immersion blender instead of a regular blender.) I would store the lotion in the refrigerator also. If you do try it, I'd love to hear how it came out. It's a question that has come up a few times when I do live classes.
  • Reply Laura at Thank you for the recipe Jen. I tried it with fresh aloe from an aloe plant. I did not use a blender but hand blender instead. I waited until everything was just about room temperature, but it was a bit tough to bring it together and have everything whip up, in the end it seems the rosewater was left behind and there was a nicely whipped cream that I packed into tiny jam jars and will store in the fridge. Are you familiar with this separation and what it may have been caused by? I'd like to know how to incorporate all of the liquid in the recipe. I chose to use a hand blender instead of my bigger one because it becomes thick and I didn't want gaskets to keep the sent.
    • Reply Jen at Thank you for sharing your experience with fresh aloe, Laura! I almost always use my regular blender and I have never had the separation issue when I do. During one of my classes, someone had the exact same issue with separation that you are describing when they used the immersion blender (but no else.) At first I thought perhaps her measurements were off but now I wonder if it's because some immersion blenders are slower at blending and perhaps not quite as powerful as a regular blender. I'm curious what would happen if you kept on blending to see if it did start to incorporate with a little time, but if you can use a regular blender, I've found that works very well every time.
    • Reply Judy at In my opinion, separation was caused from using beeswax instead of emulsifying wax. For my products I only use emulsifying wax for any products that contain both liquid and oils. For a body butter, salve, balm etc. I use beeswax.
  • Reply Caroline at This is a beautiful recipe. It feels so silky and soft! I've been using this lotion after I use my kaolin clay, honey, and rose water face mask. Thank you for an easy recipe!
    • Reply Jen at I am so happy to hear you enjoy the recipe, Caroline!
  • Reply Carla at I have made this a few times and it's lovely but I am also having separation issues. Again I have used fresh Aloe from our plant. I didn't want to over blend it & wondered if it was possible to do that or do I just keep on blending? I don't want to go out & buy aloe when I'm growing my own. It's such a shame as it's otherwise a great cream. Has anyone overcome this problem by adjusting quantities etc?
    • Reply Jen at Hi Carla, I can certainly understand wanting to use your own fresh aloe! I hope you can make that work for you. There was someone else here in the comments who tried making the recipe with fresh aloe and had similar separation issues. She was using a hand blender and depending on the speed of your blender, it doesn't always wipe up as well. I definitely recommend using a regular blender set on high if you aren't doing that. I'd also try to keep on blending to try to incorporate everything but don't let the mixture get too warm in the process. You could also try adding slightly less of the aloe to see if that helps. If you do try it, could you update us? I'm sure others will benefit in knowing if that works or not.
  • Reply Pam at love your recipe have just started making my own face and body care did add a preservative and used carrot seed EO and Frankencense, lavender and then rose absolute with a little rose geranium feels silky on my skin ty for this recipe great for beginners
    • Reply Jen at That sounds like a wonderful combination, Pam! I love adding Frankincense EO to my skincare products! I am so glad you enjoyed the recipe!
  • Reply Sophia Katz at I'm excited to make this! How long would you say the shelf life of this cream is, since there are no preserving agents in it?
    • Reply Jen at Great! I hope you love it! It will last at least 30 days but mine usually lasts a few months. I'd recommend storing an extra jars in the refrigerator.
