How to Make Homemade Coconut Cocoa Lip Balm

Today we’re kicking off our November series on Healthy, Homemade Gifts.   Every Friday for the next four weeks, we’ll be creating something fabulous and healthy to share with others!

Today’s gift idea is an easy DIY gift that can literally be made in minutes!   Homemade Coconut Cocoa Lip Balm is a perfect addition to a gift basket, stocking stuffer, teacher gift (I like to tie two together with some decorative fabric or twine and add a cute tag) or as a present “topper” tied with some ribbon.

I have to admit, I’m extremely partial to this lip balm recipe.  It’s my favorite!   I’ve tried lots of different lip balm recipes and I keep coming back to this one.  For me, it’s all about the consistency and how it feels on your lips.  This is not a lip gloss!  If you’re looking for something that feels good, stays on and nourishes your lips, you’re in the right place!

What’s In It?  All the Healthy Ingredients

Cocoa Butter:

The deliciously aromatic “butter” of the cacao tree.   Ah, yes, it smells like chocolate.  What could be more wonderful?  It’s full of vitamins and minerals and it’s completely edible.  Cocoa butter gives us the wonderful, creamy consistency in our lip balm.

Cocoa butter is available in blocks, in jars and also as wafers. Any will work for this recipe. The shelf life of cocoa butter is about 1 year from time of purchase.   If you have any extra cocoa butter left over, it’s perfect for making homemade chocolate.

Beeswax:

A natural wax that is produced by honeybees.  It is very hydrating to the skin and we use it as a binder and emulsifier in our lip balm.

Beeswax is available in blocks or in pastilles (also called pellets.)   Either will work for this recipe.  If you have a block of beeswax, simply shave off small pieces. Pastilles are much more convenient but they are more expensive.

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is sold in two forms: refined and unrefined.   You’ll want to use the unrefined (much healthier) coconut oil.   Look for words like “cold pressed,” “virgin” or “extra virgin” on the label.   Your coconut oil should smell like coconut.

When measuring your coconut oil for our recipe, make sure to measure it in it’s solid form.   If your coconut oil is in it’s liquid state (it does this when your kitchen is warm,) simply pop your jar in the freezer for about 10 minutes and then measure your coconut oil.

Coconut oil is wonderfully moisturizing for the skin.    Got leftovers?    Use your coconut oil in cooking and baking or apply to your skin as a moisturizer.

Jojoba Oil

A liquid plant wax that is most like the sebum that our own skin produces.  It’s full of vitamins and minerals that nourish the skin.

Got leftovers?  Jojoba Oil is one of my favorite oils to use as a facial serum.  I apply it every morning before applying my makeup.  No other moisturizer is needed.

Making It All Look Pretty

Plain lip balm tubes are fine but adding some decorative stickers takes it up a notch, don’t you think?

The most common lip balm tubes come in clear, white and blackWhite tubes are probably the most versatile to use with stickers.

I used these decorative stickers in the photos you see. I love the cute little sayings and the fact that they won’t rub off like some other stickers.

If you’re handy with a computer, you could also get creative and make your own stickers.  That could be a lot of fun!

If you’re anything like me, you’ll fall in love with homemade lip balm and never look at the store-bought stuff again!  Many of the people I’ve given homemade lip balm to come back asking if I’d make them more!  That’s when you know you’re onto something good!

If you think this might be the case,  you might seriously consider buying your lip balm tubes in quantities of 25 or 50.  There’s isn’t much of a price difference between smaller and larger quantities.

Happy gift-making, friends!    I hope you enjoy our series and are able to bless others with some healthy, homemade gifts!

You will need:

Instructions:

Prepare your lip balm containers

In a double boiler (or a heat safe measuring cup in a small pan of water,) add the cocoa butter, beeswax, coconut oil and jojoba oil.  Stir with a fork until everything is melted and smooth.

Immediately pour the liquid into the prepared lip balm containers and allow to cool completely.   Place lids on all containers.

Note from Jen:

You can add some variety to your lip balm by adding essential oils (approx. 20 drops per batch)  or by infusing the jojoba oil with herbs for a few weeks prior to making your lip balm.  Herbs such as calendula, lemon balm, and mint make wonderful, healing lip balms.  You can learn about infusing oils here.

    • Reply Jen at You can do it, Roamy! My kids help me all the time! Just be sure to use exact measurements so the consistency is right :)
  • Reply Amy at Have you ever tried it without the jojoba oil and just doubled up the coconut oil? Would it be too stiff?
    • Reply Jen at Hi Amy, I've experimented quite a bit and really love the consistency of the lip balm with the jojoba oil but experimenting is all part of the fun! I think using coconut oil instead of the jojoba oil would be fine. If you are worried about it being too firm, you could add just slightly less beeswax. You'll have to let me know how it goes!
